
Atlantic, IA -- The Ballard Women's Tennis Team delivered a spectacular performance at the Individual Team Tennis Tournament hosted in Atlantic, showcasing their talent and determination on the court. With outstanding victories in both singles and doubles play, the team secured multiple spots in the state championship, solidifying their status as a formidable force in high school tennis.
In singles play, Kaitlyn Zugay, seeded #1, displayed her exceptional skill by advancing to the quarterfinals with a hard-fought win of 7-5, 7-5. Her precision and strategic play were on full display, setting the stage for a series of impressive victories. In the quarterfinals, Zugay continued her dominance with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win, securing her spot in the semifinals. Her determination and focus propelled her to a resounding 6-0, 6-1 victory in the semifinals, earning her a well-deserved spot in the state championship and clinching the regional champion title with a finals win over Denison's Schulz, finishing at 6-3, 6-3.
Ava Easter also represented Ballard in singles play, demonstrating her skill and resilience despite facing a tough opponent and falling short with a score of 6-0, 6-2. Her effort and determination showcased the team's depth and competitive spirit.
In doubles play, Payton Askelsen and Memphis Inglett delivered a stellar performance, defeating the #4 seed in a thrilling match to advance to the quarterfinals. Their dynamic play and strong teamwork were evident as they secured victories, including a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win in the quarterfinals and a hard-fought victory in the semifinals over Lewis Central with a score of 6-2, 7-5, highlighting their exceptional net play and movement on the court. They ultimately claimed the Doubles Champions title with a victory over teammates Ellie Volkmann and Jocie Hobbs, finishing with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Volkmann and Hobbs also showcased their talent in doubles play, advancing through challenging matches to reach the quarterfinals and securing a notable victory over Lewis Central with a score of 6-3, 6-3. Their determination was evident as they battled through tough sets, including a thrilling match against the #3 seed, finishing at 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to secure their spot in the state championship.
While facing their teammates Askelsen and Inglett in the final doubles match, Volkmann and Hobbs displayed their skill and sportsmanship, although falling short with a score of 2-6, 2-6.
The team will be competing again on Friday, May 24, as they head to Iowa City for the State Individual Tennis Tournament.
