The men's cross country team competed in the Mike Carr Invitational Meet on Monday. The men finished in 8th place with 227 points. Pella won the meet scoring 39 team points.
Seth Pencook paced the Bombers finished 32nd in a time of 18:10.5. Max Davidson placed 43rd with a time of 18:40.9. Bradley Sage ran in a time of 18:58 and placed 47th. Jayden Leland (49th - 19:06.5), Trent Payne (56th - 19:32.8), and Logan Huntrods (57th - 19:45.1) rounded out the Bomber's scoring. Austin Shoen had to drop out mid race due to an injury.
Comments From Head Coach Scott Barth:
"The boys ran admirably considering that our top runner Austin Shoen had to drop out of the race ⅔ of the way through. His calf tightened up and he actually went down and could not finish the race. Seth Pencook stepped up into the top spot on the team with a 44th place overall run of 18:10. Max Davidson continued his upwards trend in placing 66th in a tough field with a time of 18:40. Bradley Sage placed and Jayden Leland finished closely together in 74th and 78th place. Trent Payne rounded out our scorers with a 91st place finish out of 154 varsity runners. Logan Huntrods wrapped out another varsity performance in 19:45
So, all things considered, it was an ok race for us but not our best of the season. Losing Austin hurt us in the scoring department quite a bit. Seth ran an admirable race and Max continues to impress. We struggled moving our remaining pack forward and that resulted in our 11th of 24 team overall placement. With that being said, the teams were tough just like in the girls competition. There are 10 teams in attendance who are currently ranked. We finished 11th. I do still believe that we have the potential to be a ranked team after slipping out this week from #19 last week. We do however have some work to do. We need to work on some mental toughness and our ability to grind out a tough race - running through a bit of pain. If we can do that, we will be in position to move up."
The Bombers are back in action on Saturday - September 17 when they compete in the Heartland Classic. The men will race at 11:50 AM.
